…or It's Difficult to Get There from Here.
This is why I try to go over the hill only once a week. You are looking at most of Marin County. East Marin has more money on display. West Marin has more cows. And horses. We are more counter-culture but it's an embarrassingly well-heeled counter culture. The whole county tries green practices (I need my SUV, but my other car is a Prius) and eco-Nazis abound.
Steve's SIL, Janet and her husband live in Bolinas [that little isosceles triangle of a lagoon at the center bottom of the map] and use the OMG Road almost daily. I don't know how, I scared myself silly last week. Of course it was my first time and perhaps I could get use to it. I'd like to take it again, because it is outstandingly beautiful. It's the way to Muir Woods also and I still haven't visited there. If any of you would like to see this area of the country, I'd recommend this time of year, even if you do have more chance of rain. There are fewer cars on that crazy road and fewer bicyclists with death wishes.
Photos grabbed from the internet:
The Samuel P Taylor State Park [on the green path on the map above].
These two photos are by Robert Campbell who has some outstanding aerial shots of the area on his site.
Tom Killian uses fabulous woodcuts/linocuts to record the area.
My only goal approaching a New Year's resolution involves getting out to see all of this with my own eyes, walk little bits of it and record it in my Brand New Sketchbook. I hope that I will be posting some of the results.
